How does botulinum toxin work on frown lines?
Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles that draw the brows together (corrugator) and pull them down (procerus). As this pull eases, the vertical line between the brows smooths out and the gaze looks more relaxed. The effect sets in after a few days and usually lasts three to six months.
The glabella – the area between the eyebrows – is one of the most rewarding zones for botulinum toxin. The small muscle group of corrugators and procerus is clearly defined, and the line forms almost entirely dynamically, through contraction when you frown. Exactly these movement lines respond especially well to treatment.
The forehead and frown lines act as opposing forces. If only the forehead is treated, the frown between the brows can suddenly become more pronounced. We therefore often balance both areas with each other. Conversely, when treating the frown alone, we take care not to alter the brow position unintentionally.
Very deep frown lines that are already visible as an etched groove at complete rest can be clearly softened with botulinum toxin, but not always fully erased. In such cases we honestly discuss what is realistic – and whether a fine additional filler in the residual line could make sense.

- Common and temporary: mild redness or a small bruise at the injection site.
- Occasionally: a pressure or tension headache in the first few days.
- Rare and temporary: a drooping upper eyelid (ptosis) if the toxin diffuses toward the lid-lifting area – largely avoidable with clean technique and correct depth.
- Rare: a heavy feeling in the eyebrows or slight asymmetry, which can be adjusted.

When should treatment be avoided?
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Certain neuromuscular conditions (e.g. myasthenia gravis)
- Known allergy to ingredients of botulinum toxin
- Acute infection or inflammation between the eyebrows
- A tendency to drooping upper lids or pre-existing lid ptosis – the glabella is then injected especially carefully and shallowly
Aftercare
- Do not rub or massage the forehead and brow area for the first few hours
- Keep your head upright for about 4 hours; do not lie down
- No sport, sauna or tanning for 24 hours
- Gently frowning a few times in the first hours is harmless and may even help distribution

Both muscle groups are opponents. If only one is relaxed, the other can become more pronounced. Treated together, the result looks more harmonious.
Will a deep, etched line disappear completely?
The dynamic part smooths well. A deep line already visible at rest can be softened but not always fully erased; a fine filler may complement it.
How long does it last on the frown lines?
