What are hyaluronic-acid fillers?
In a filler treatment, a gel of stabilised hyaluronic acid is placed under the skin. It cushions folds, adds volume and defines contours such as the lips or jawline. Hyaluronic acid binds water and is slowly broken down by the body – so the result is temporary and, if needed, dissolvable.

Safety: recognising and treating a vascular occlusion
The most serious – though very rare – complication of a filler treatment is a vascular occlusion: if filler enters a blood vessel, the blood supply to the skin can be impaired. In very rare cases this risks tissue damage, and around the nose and eyes also visual disturbance. Warning signs are severe or increasing pain, pale or blotchy skin discolouration and changes in vision – please contact us immediately if these occur.
We reduce this risk through anatomical experience, particular care in danger zones (nose, tear trough, glabella), the use of blunt micro-cannulas where sensible, and slow, low-pressure injection. For an emergency we keep the antidote hyaluronidase and an emergency protocol ready – an enzyme that can rapidly dissolve hyaluronic-acid filler.
Dissolvable: the safety net of hyaluronic acid
A major advantage of hyaluronic acid is that it is reversible. If you are unhappy with the result, if irregularities or nodules form, or if a correction is wanted, the filler can be specifically dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase. The same enzyme is also the emergency treatment for a vascular occlusion.
This reversibility takes away many people’s fear of a “permanent” result. Even so, a treatment should be planned with measure from the start. We dose conservatively and prefer to build volume gradually rather than overfill.

- Common and temporary: swelling, redness, tenderness or small bruises.
- Occasionally: palpable nodules or irregularities – usually treatable.
- Rare: infection, reactivation of lip herpes, allergic reaction.
- Very rare but serious: vascular occlusion. If filler enters a vessel it can impair blood supply to the skin and – very rarely – cause tissue damage or visual disturbance; particularly relevant at the nose, tear trough and glabella.
- Contact us immediately in case of severe or increasing pain, pale/blotchy skin discolouration or changes in vision.
When should treatment be avoided?

Aftercare
- Do not massage the treated area firmly for 24–48 hours (unless instructed)

- Cooling eases swelling; blood thinners and alcohol promote bruising

Can fillers be dissolved again?
Yes. Hyaluronic-acid fillers can be specifically dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase – for example in case of dissatisfaction, irregularities or for correction. The same enzyme is also the emergency treatment for a vascular occlusion. This reversibility is an important safety advantage of hyaluronic acid.
How long does lip swelling last?
Usually two to three days. During this time the lips may look slightly fuller than the final result.

Is a hyaluronic-acid filler treatment dangerous?
Performed carefully by a physician, the treatment is low-risk. Temporary swelling, redness or bruising are common. The most serious, very rare complication is a vascular occlusion. We minimise the risk through anatomical experience and blunt micro-cannulas, and keep the antidote hyaluronidase ready for emergencies.
Can the filler shift or migrate?
With correct technique and amount, modern cross-linked hyaluronic acid usually stays in place. Visible “migration” is mostly caused by too much material or unsuitable placement. We dose conservatively and can dissolve the filler again with hyaluronidase if needed.
Can I have a filler treatment during pregnancy?
No. We do not perform filler treatments during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as there is insufficient safety data. Please feel free to contact us – we will advise you on a later, sensible time.
Are lip fillers possible despite cold sores?
A lip filler can reactivate cold sores (herpes simplex). We do not treat during an active outbreak. If you are prone to frequent cold sores, we discuss preventive antiviral treatment beforehand.
Which fillers do you use?
We use high-quality, CE-certified hyaluronic-acid fillers (medical devices) from established manufacturers and choose a gel of suitable firmness for each area – firmer gels for structural contours such as the chin or jawline, softer ones for the lips or tear trough. We deliberately rely on proven brand quality rather than budget products; all products are approved, stored correctly and can, if needed, be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
